Andrew Whitaker – The Optimistic Programmer

Welcome! I started this website to have my own place to document my software projects and write about life experiences. This is where I practice being a “producer” instead of a “consumer”. Nestled in the pages of this site, you’ll find my software development portfolio and blog posts about software, athletics, self-development, and literature.

In all honesty, I’m conservative and pessimistic by nature, but I’ve lived long enough to know that life is incredibly more beautiful when you have an optimistic mindset. I think my temperament for seeing risks has helped me tremendously in my computer science education because it’s made me a more thorough developer. With that being said, I want to have a posture and attitude that breathes life into my relationships, projects and endeavors. I’m optimistic that I’ll develop that for myself. Below are a few resources that have impacted this transition for me.

  • Speech – a poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox.
  • A recent memo by Howard Marks, Something of Value, in which he remarks, “To be a good equity investor, I think you have to be an optimist; certainly, it’s no activity for doomsayers.”
  • A recent podcast between Jordan Peterson and Matt Ridley: Rational Optimism, in which they discuss why people perceive the world to be deteriorating even though the standard of living has been consistently and rapidly improving for everyone around the world.
